The epitome of vintage is a gorgeous, antique style, lace wedding dress and until you get married (or unless you’re a fashion designer) you don’t realize just how many kinds of lace are out there. The most popular wedding lace is, of course, French lace, and there are hundreds of varieties of this. Each little town has it’s own variation and own name like delicate floral Chantilly lace or gorgeous corded Alencon lace. Then there are the Italian laces, like geometric Venetian or Guipure lace.

If you don’t want to have lace in your dress, but still want to have it in your wedding, a delicate touch of lace can make just about anything feminine and beautiful. Lace works on every level, from wedding dresses, to stationery, decorations and wedding bouquets.

It all starts with the invitations, so incorporate it into your theme right away. Even simply tying a bit of lace onto each vintage/handmade invite once they are complete, adds a lovely touch.

Lace works well  in so many combinations for weddings like burlap and lace, pearls and lace… so it’s easy to find places to include it! Try adding lace to the edges of your burlap table runners, for a rustic but elegant look. If you want your bridal bouquet to last a lifetime, have a lace bouquet created just for you, with pearl accents. You could even include a tiny bit of your favourite lace in your groom’s boutonnière. Lace mixes well with most fabrics! Tie some lace around little jars to create super sweet candle holders, or sew some lace doilies together to create your own truly vintage table runners.

Winter brides, it’s time to start getting into the details of your wedding! First things first, if you want to set the tone right for your Game of Thrones themed wedding, start with your save-the-dates and/or invites. We suggest creating some  that look like medieval wizard scrolls.

Then, find the perfect fantasy location. We imagine it being in a cool castle or old mansion to create the perfect setting. Or, locate a cool spot in a forest that you could have your ceremony, use long logs as seating for your guests.

If you really want to go all out, tell your guests to come in costume and serve your drinks in horn mugs, made by the same company that supplied the mugs for the show, The Jelling Dragon. Or, if you can’t afford the 40-something dollars per mug, order some Game of Thrones themed beer labels from Carbophobic. Serve food featured in the show such as roasted rabbit, spice roasted duck, and venison.

Let wilderness inspired your centerpieces, incorporate wood, tree trunks, wood coasters and cake stands to give your decor an earthy feel. It would also work well to incorporate lots of lush greenery or  moss into your tablescapes. Go all out, bring some trees into your reception area if it’s not possible to have it outside. Add lots of pillar candles to make it extra romantic. Medieval touches like pewter plates and black velvet ribbon will help to tie the whole look together.

Lastly… wear a tiara! When else will you get the chance?

For those of you who don’t know… Game of Thrones is an American medieval fantasy series about seven noble families fighting for control of the mythical land of Westeros. Based on author George R. R. Martin‘s best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels, the first of which is called A Game of Thrones, the television series debuted in the U.S. on April 17, 2011 on HBO.

Spring is here, and that means gorgeous pastel colours, including one of our very favourites of the season, the palest of greens, a mint green wedding theme! Some call it sea foam green, the experts at pantone call it grayed jade, we don’t mind what name it goes by, we’re in love. It’s so light and fresh we can’t wait to see brides using it this season!

Incorporate is into your bridesmaids dresses, or you engagement/rehearsal dinner dress… mix up the BHLDN Crinoline skirt with a lacy tank for a modern look with a smidge of vintage love. With Alica-Rae gone to Iceland with her husband, this week’s theme centers around the wonder of Icelandic Weddings.

Set in the Icelandic landscape, almost like it’s from another world with jaw-dropping waterfalls, natural ice blue hot springs and volcanic lava, just to name a few, Icelandic engagements are generally long – 2-3 years. The weddings usually take place over a week with up to three presentations of the bride and groom at their own churches as well as the one they will be married at.

Icelandic wedding traditions like bed gifts are quirky and historical. It was customary for the groom to present his bride with a gift on the bridal bed, though today it is also common for the bride to present the groom with a wedding-bed gift. Traditionally the bride would be waiting for her new husband wearing only her bridal headdress, which her new husband would remove. Once the couple were in bed together the priest would bless them one last time and the couple would drink from the bridal cups to seal their marriage.

A few fun ideas to incorporate into your wedding are an Icelandic wedding cake called Kransakaka and the Icelandic wedding drink, Mead. Way back in the Viking era, it was a legal requirement to drink Mead for a full ‘moon’ or 30 days after a marriage.  This brings us our modern day term: The Honeymoon.

The Kransakaka is the traditional Icelandic wedding cake which is flavoured with almond. Inside it is filled with chocolates and various candy treats…divine!

If you’re planning a German wedding theme, whether in traditional Bavaria or up in the Alps, or in a bustling city like Berlin or Munich filled with culture, or even traveling down the Rhine River by boat… if you want to have your wedding in a true fairy tale setting, the possibilites are endless in Germany.

It’s the land of fabulous castles high up in the hills, fit for kings and queens, like the beautiful Lichtenstein Castle or at Neuschwanstein Castle, the place which inspired Walt Disney to create the Magic Kingdom. Unfortunately you can’t get married inside Neuschwanstein Castle, but you can set up your ceremony on the grassy area outside, or use the small chapel to say your “I do’s”.

Germany is filled with so much history and tradition, and with that comes amazing antiques! Find intricate wedding rings decorated with symbols of love and quotations from the marriage ceremony to complete your look. Both the bride and groom-to-be wear a ring on their left hand and after the wedding, they move the wedding ring to their right hand, like in many European countries. We absolutely love this! Why shouldn’t the groom-to-be get to wear an engagement ring too?

The first thing on your to-do list for a German wedding theme is to stock up on cheap china. At your rehearsal dinner, the night before your wedding, liven up the evening by throwing the dishes on the ground! This traditional party is called Polterabend, and it is meant to bring the bride more good luck with each piece of china she shatters. Afterwards, the bride and groom together sweep up all the bits and pieces to make sure nothing ever gets broken in their house again! This comes from a German proverb, “scherben bringen glück”, meaning “shards bring luck”.  

Don’t forget to also get a German wedding cup, a special vessel that a couple drinks out of for their wedding toast. The old story behind the cup dates back to the 15th century and goes liks this according to Zank You:

Centuries ago, in a small, southern German town called Nuermberg, there lived a wealthy nobleman. His daughter fell in love with a lowly goldsmith and the couple wanted to marry. Her father did not approve, so he threw the goldsmith into a dark dungeon and continued to offer his daughter wealthier, more “appropriate” suiters. The girl grew pale and weak as she longed for her beloved. Her father, concerned for her health, reluctantly offered a proposal:“If your goldsmith can make a chalice from which two people can drink at the same time without spilling a single drop, I will free him and you shall become his bride.”

The nobleman thought he’d proposed the impossible. However, the goldsmith was determined and inspired by love, and he skillfully created a masterpiece. The cup he created is a sculpted girl with a hollow skirt to serve as one cup. The girl’s arms hold a smaller cup that swivels in the direction of the second drinker. The nobleman’s daughter and the goldsmith could each drink from one end, without a drop spilled. The nobleman was left with no choice but to allow the couple to wed, and to this day, the chalice remains a symbol of love, faithfulness and good luck to the couples who drink from it.

It’s hard not to find true vintage when in London, with an antique, retro or vintage shop on every street or corner. On Berkwick Street, a hundred fabric shops are filled with antique lace and fabrics from all over the world. Markets are in every corner of the city. Pick up bouquets and floral ideas at Colombia Road Flower Market. Find some perfectly created cupcakes and maybe the perfect wedding wine at Borough Market. Scour the antique stalls on Portobello Road on a Saturday or visit at Old Spitalfields market on a Sunday for that perfect vintage piece you’ve been hunting for. Head to Brick Lane for all other odds and ends, vintage shops, antique fabric stores and more!

London doesn’t just have inspiration for brides; vintage shops have truly retro gingham bowties, and Saville Row is filled with some of the oldest bespoke suit designers in the world, helping grooms to look almost as good as their brides.

You could have famous street names, Oxford Street, Brick Lane, Carnaby Street, or landmarks, Buckingham Palace, Trafalger Square, Picaddily Circus, as table names or incorporate London landmarks like Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, St. Pauls Cathedral into the details of the day. Incorporate red, white and blue into you day in a classic way – with red phonebooths and union jack bunting.

Londoners are also famous for their  quintessential English garden fetes as well, since there are so many beautiful parks and garden scattered throughout the city. Think English roses, queen annes lace, and lots of Pimms and soda, chalkboards like the country pubs, vintage crockery and fine royal albert china!

You are the bride and groom, so you should have the seats to show it!

Although it’s a detail that’s often overlooked during the busy planning process, planning some cute details for your chairs makes for some great photos and most definitely adds a new element of charm to your big day. You can just do your own chairs, the ceremony chairs, or even all the chairs if you’re daring and have the time!

Whether used as a focal point at your wedding or as a little addition to your wedding decor, it’s fun to dress up your chairs with something that uniquely represents you and matches up with your wedding style, theme, and budget.

You could adorn the chairs with simple hand painted Mr. & Mrs. signs to showcase your new married status – this is always cute!

Most brides are choosing to leave the full chair covers behind and are opting for mismatched ribbons, draped fabric, ruffles, lace or sheer sashes… find a few fabrics that match your colour scheme and get creative. Burlap is a great neutral colour that works perfectly with a rustic theme! Or, use a sash to tie a small bunch of fragrant flowers to the back of the chairs!

Another great idea is to choose a set of brightly coloured chairs for warm and quirky feel. You can easily find some old chairs at the thrift store and do them up yourself to make them extra special. We think the last of your four traditional good luck charms, something blue, is the one that you get to have the most fun with!  The possibilities are endless. They can be as big and bold as having blue bridesmaids dresses or as small and subdued as a turquoise pendant around your neck or little blue sapphire earrings.

Something blue stands for purity, love, and fidelity. This part of the tradition began in ancient Israel, when brides would wear a blue ribbon in their hair or on the edge of their dresses to symbolize loyalty.

How about letting your fingers do the talking and paint your nails in a gorgeous pastel shade? Or, step away from the traditional white lace wedding undies and surprise him with something fancy and blue underneath!

Shoes are another great option, most brides aren’t wearing ‘wedding shoes’ anymore – most bridal shops don’t even carry them! So, choose something that is unique and you! How about some blue suede shoes?

Pantone has announced the official color of 2013: Emerald!

Many believe the vibrant colour makes you lucky in love, so how fitting to have an emerald themed wedding? It’s also the traditional birthstone for May making it perfect for upcoming spring weddings. According to Greek mythology, emerald is sacred stone of the goddess venus, and is thought to perserve love.

If you want to make a bold statement on your big day, this is your colour.

You could use it as an accent color too, by mixing it up a bit and including a few shades and textures of green to break up the strong emerald features of your day. It will always look great paired with ivorys and whites, and even other jewel tones like ruby, amethyst and sapphire and so regal with gold.

It can be incorporated  with bold elements such as an emerald engagement ring, finger nails, bridesmaids dresses and ceremony decor – or with subtle details like little gems or touches on your wedding stationary, flowers with lots of greenery, green candles or napkins.
