Burlap will never go out of style; it is the perfect accent in any home or event and we found our favourite way to incorporate it into your wedding decor, or simply onto your kitchen table.

Here’s our very own DIY Stencilled Burlap Placemat Tutorial:

Cut your desired amount of burlap placements to a size that suits your décor. Two yards of burlap will make approximately nine placements. We bought our burlap from a fabulous company called Burlap Bag and Company, a wholesaler based in Burnaby. Bring cash as they don’t take credit cards!

We cut each burlap placemat to 14 inches x 19 inches, allowing room for fraying. Then, using a linen setting, iron out the wrinkles in your placemats.

Gently pull one thread at a time from each corner towards you to create a frayed fringe all the way around the placemat. Do this until the fringe is as long as you would like it to be. We frayed about ½ an inch long for ours.

When you have finished fraying, some of the edges will be uneven, so snip them the even it out.

To stop the placemats from fraying further, use a sewing machine to quickly sew around the entire edge placemat, at the bottom of the fringe you created. This will make them last much longer. We chose black thread because that was the colour paint we used for stencilling.

Cover your work surface in newspaper or some parchment paper. Then, choose your first stencil. Use some painter’s tape to tape your stencil in place once you decide where you want your stencilled design to be. This will keep your stencil in place while you are stencilling.

There are many brushes that you can use for this project but we found the best ones are rounded flat sponge brushes called “spouncers”.

Since this is a small project, we recommend that the less paint that you use, the better. Apply just one or two light coats by dabbing up and down gently. This will make sure no paint leaks under the stencil, maintaining clean lines. You might need to press your brush harder into the corners to ensure that you have perfect corners. Remember to hold down your stencil, as you don’t want any paint to bleed into the edges of your design.

As soon as you are finished, remove the tape and gently lift the stencil off of your placemat and set it aside. Make sure you wash your used stencils right away with a gentle soap and water and allow it to dry flat before you move onto the next step.

Right after you take off the stencil, lay a piece of parchment paper on top of your design. With the iron on linen setting, gently place your iron on top of your design and parchment paper and leave for approximately two to three minutes. Be sure not to leave it any longer or the parchment paper may burn through your burlap placemat. Ironing will set the paint onto your burlap placemat, thus making it permanent.

And voila! You have the perfect rustic design burlap placemats for your home.

You could also consider making a bride and groom stencil and use them to mark your places at your wedding reception. If you wanted to be extra crafty, and you aren’t having a very large wedding, you could stencil the first names or initals of your guests and use them as place markers and favours all in one!

Speaking of designs, here are a few places where you can purchase your very own stencil designs :

2. iStencils
3. Stencil Planet

The epitome of vintage is a gorgeous, antique style, lace wedding dress and until you get married (or unless you’re a fashion designer) you don’t realize just how many kinds of lace are out there. The most popular wedding lace is, of course, French lace, and there are hundreds of varieties of this. Each little town has it’s own variation and own name like delicate floral Chantilly lace or gorgeous corded Alencon lace. Then there are the Italian laces, like geometric Venetian or Guipure lace.

If you don’t want to have lace in your dress, but still want to have it in your wedding, a delicate touch of lace can make just about anything feminine and beautiful. Lace works on every level, from wedding dresses, to stationery, decorations and wedding bouquets.

It all starts with the invitations, so incorporate it into your theme right away. Even simply tying a bit of lace onto each vintage/handmade invite once they are complete, adds a lovely touch.

Lace works well in so many combinations for weddings like burlap and lace, pearls and lace… so it’s easy to find places to include it! Try adding lace to the edges of your burlap table runners, for a rustic but elegant look. If you want your bridal bouquet to last a lifetime, have a lace bouquet created just for you, with pearl accents. You could even include a tiny bit of your favourite lace in your groom’s boutonnière. Lace mixes well with most fabrics! Tie some lace around little jars to create super sweet candle holders, or sew some lace doilies together to create your own truly vintage table runners.

How will you be incorporating lace into your wedding day?

Want to learn how to plan a vintage tea party for an upcoming wedding or shower? Or do you simply just feel like entertaining your best friends the old-fashioned way? Well, look no further, as today we’ve got some tips to get you started with planning your perfect vintage tea party!

1. What time is your party?

First things first, when planning a vintage tea party, you must decide what time of day you’re going to have a tea party – brunch, afternoon, or evening. From there, you can choose what recipes and drinks to include in your menus.

There’s something about a breakfast tea party that is fabulous. We’re not used to having a great time first thing in the morning so that makes it extra special. Plus, the food at breakfast can be so varied with fruit, eggs, meats, cheeses, spreads and smoothies! High breakfast is a fun way to go.

In the mid 19-century, Anna Maria, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, introduced ‘Afternoon Tea’ to the world. She couldn’t stand the time between lunch and dinner, and always insisted she was hungry and asked to be brought cakes and tea between 2 – 5 p.m. The Brits are very proud of their tea tradition and since 1868 when Queen Victoria held her first Royal Tea Party at Buckingham Palace, they haven’t stopped. Now, the tradition of afternoon tea has become popular all over the world (according to The Vintage Tea Party, by Angel Adoree).

Evening tea parties can be the most indulgent and glamorous of all, plus nobody will feel naughty drinking tea cocktails. Although not traditional, they can be the most fun since you can be as inventive as you please! Dance, laugh and enjoy!

2. Where will you have your party?

Finding the right location is also essential, whether it’s tea for two, or for one hundred and two. Home is where people feel the most relaxed and comfortable – the most memorable parties are always the ones held in our friend’s homes because they are so intimate and personal. If you’re worried about not having enough space, consider including your outdoor space as well. Most tea parties aren’t seated so you don’t need chairs for everyone, unless you’re planning a seated formal tea. Also, consider renting furniture or marquees or lighting from local businesses to enhance your space at home. We’re thinking vintage rentals from places like Trove Vintage Rentals and Meuse Boutique. Old couches add a great touch to any tea party!

If home isn’t an option, consider your local park, or renting out a heritage home or garden. Just make sure you get in touch with the parks and recreation board about any rules and regulations on food and drinks in the park. If all else fails, go exploring! Bars, restaurants, churches, clubs, town halls – any venue with a little character should definitely be added to your consideration list.

3. How will you invite your guests?

For hosting a vintage tea party, a handwritten invitation is pretty much essential, in our humble opinion. It’s an old-fashioned and personal touch that makes the recipient feel extra special and like you really took the time to invite them to your party. Visit The Vintage Patisserie for some ready-made invitations. Once you’ve set a date, venue and (most importantly) who to invite, the fun can then begin.

Image Courtesy of The Vintage Patisserie

4. How to decorate for your tea party?

The organisational part of the party-planning can be just as fun as the big event! The next big step, our most favourite step, is sourcing out vintage props for your party.

There are plenty of places where you can find amazing vintage items; think garage sales, flea markets, antique markets, Salvation Army thrift stores, local thrift stores, Value Village, antique shops (Main Street is full of these!) and affordable local shops like Spruce Collective, The Passionate Home, The Antique Warehouse.

The best places to find deals are the ones that aren’t labeled as “vintage.” Etsy can also be an amazing place to find vintage pieces, just be careful with finding items in your area, otherwise shipping costs can get pretty pricey.

When buying vintage, make sure you consider the quality. If it’s going to cost more to restore it than it’s worth, there’s no point. Look for things like an old birdcage, teapots, cups and saucers, leather suitcases, intricate frames, vintage evening and cocktail dresses, Union Jack paraphernalia, chairs, couches, silver cutlery (especially tea spoons).

A really cute idea would be to have personalised vintage spoons from The Loving Spoon, or try it yourself with this DIY tutorial!

Here’s a list of essentials to buy, rent or create for your party from Angel Adoree, the vintage tea party expert -

Teapots

Teacups and saucers

Dessert plates

Cake plates

Cake stands

Milk jugs

Sugar bowls

Glassware and jugs

Dessert forks, knives, teaspoons and serving spoons

On the non-essential but wonderful list -

Vintage card games

Dominoes

Taxidermy

Union Jack and/or World War II memorabilia

Flags

Spring is here, and that means gorgeous pastel colours, including one of our very favourites of the season, the palest of greens, a mint green wedding theme! Some call it sea foam green, the experts at pantone call it grayed jade, we don’t mind what name it goes by, we’re in love. It’s so light and fresh we can’t wait to see brides using it this season!

Incorporate is into your bridesmaids dresses, or you engagement/rehearsal dinner dress… mix up the BHLDN Crinoline skirt with a lacy tank for a modern look with a smidge of vintage love. Be extra bold and have a mint green wedding dress. Be subtle and have minty fresh jeweled earrings. If you love statement jewelry, don’t be afraid to let your fashionista side come out and wear a bold necklace and earrings to match your mint green wedding day. Another understated way to add it into your wedding day attire is with your shoes!

If you’re not into having it in your wedding day outfit, show your love for your wedding color in the little details. Have a cake with mint green accents, or even better, have mint chocolate chip cupcakes!

Paint your mason jars with a mint green chalk paint at fill them with flowers to place down the aisle or as center pieces(sold at Meuse Boutique on West 4th or The Passionate Home in Langley), or even make your own chalk paint to get that perfect colour (DIY chalk paint tutorial as featured this week here) Or, if you’re really crafty and want to have some pieces you can use in your home after the wedding, visit your local thrift and antique shops to find some vintage finds to incorporate into your big day and then paint them! Think matching minty green bride and groom chairs, or a cute vintage desk to use as your signing table, or an old window for your seating chart.

How will you be incorporating a mint green wedding theme into your big day? Let us know!

Spring has sprung and BHLDN Spring 2013 Collection has arrived! Our favourite part is the addition of mother of the bride dresses. I know from personal experience it was tough for my mother to find a dress that she felt fabulous in. I mean, she is the mother of the bride and deserves to look spectacular on my big day as well.

BHLDN has come up with some of the most perfect designs for your moms, incorporating lace and other delicate fabrics like chiffon and silk. They are all in very wedding-esque tones like blush pink, ivory and taupe.

Some say that mother of the bride dresses are the hardest ones to choose, but here are some options to make it a breeze…

Our personal favourite, this dress is so classy, yet so flattering on basically any body type, and it doesn’t scream “mom.” It’s sexy because it shapes the silhouette, yet is still classic. Silk chiffon drapes and twists over metallic lace, settling across shoulders like a delicate mist. By Badgley Mischka. Back zip; wrap connects in back with hook-and-eye, or can be worn draped loosely around shoulders. Cloud Cover Dress - $650

Exquisite draping is the star of this Byron Lars original design. Lush silk charmeuse cascades to a tapered waist accentuated by a removable belt, before billowing out to a swirl-worthy full skirt. Preservation Society Dress - $500

For the classic mother. This silvered tweed dress, abloom with appliqued gold flowers, walks the line between day and evening wear with elegant ease. Badgley Mischka ramps up the sophistication level with crisp taupe piping at the edges and slim slash pockets. Twilight Shift Dress - $595

For the mom who wants to feel like she’s in a fairy tale too. We think this might be a bit over the top for most mothers of the bride, but it might just be the perfect fit for an extravagant ballroom affair. A swirl of blush tulle, a scattering of metallic roses. Badgley Mischka’sstrapless silhouette seems plucked from the pages of a moody fairytale. Beaux Arts Dress - $540

What is your mother going to wear to your big day? Do you have a preference on what you want her to wear, like matching a certain colour scheme or style?

Today on the blog we have a guest post from Aimée Sulz, one of five lead singers with the Famous Players Band, a Vancouver-based wedding and party band. She has a nine year old daughter, is recently married, and is a few credits shy of a degree in psychology. She has been to more weddings in the last nine years than she can remember and is totally biased when it comes to music and weddings. Aimée tackles the big debate from an insider’s perspective… Should you hire a wedding band vs wedding DJ?

Aimée writes:

As a singer and a recent bride, I have an uncommon perspective on the debate between hiring a wedding band vs a wedding DJ. In this blog-post, I hope to give you a little insight and advice on choosing the musical entertainment for your wedding.

Researching for my own wedding, I found a rather eye-opening statistic: People spend almost twice as much money on photography than they do on music and entertainment. Now, I understand that you want great photos to remember your big day with. But, you only get one chance to have the party of your life; to host and thank all of your family and friends for their support over the years. If you don’t have a great reception, your best memories will be your photographs. And, isn’t that just a little sad?

My first bit of advice is this: if you have the budget, do it all! Get your favourite band and a DJ. Most bands and DJs can work really well together, and you get the best of both worlds. With both a DJ and a band, you can have a seamless night of music, entertainment and partying until the clock strikes whatever time you have noted on your contracts with the venue. However, if you’re like me, and you can’t afford to have it all, go for the band. Here are a few reasons why:

Live Music = Energy

You’re throwing a party here. What’s the biggest buzz kill at a party? An empty dance floor. With a live band, you’re not only paying for the music, but also the show. Live bands are like party magnets. Trust me, I’ve seen it happen. We played a show once where there were multiple venues and multiple forms of entertainment. We were the only live band, however. By the end of the first hour, our dance floor was packed and the people who weren’t dancing were still in the room, watching. The DJ rooms were empty. Why? Because, whether you like to dance or if you prefer to be more of a wallflower, with a live band, you get the music and a show. With a band, you get the energy of living people, who are genuinely enjoying themselves, and that, my dear readers, is contagious.

Live Music = Adaptability

Wedding band’s are professional entertainers. We can read a crowd and move with you. Are you shy? We can start you off slow, and even do some silly things to get you to loosen up. We can help you feel more comfortable, before the cocktails kick in. Not so shy? A great band can play songs from every era, so, if grandma wants to hear Elvis, then you want to dance to Beyoncé, we can do that! Heck, we’ll even lead the crowd in a Michael Jackson dance off, if that’s how you roll.

Live Music = Integration Like I said above, if you are less inclined to dance, a DJ leaves a lot to be desired. With a live band, maybe you don’t want to dance, but you’ll stay to watch the show. The more people who stay and enjoy your party, the more successful your party will be. With a live band, you have the opportunity to please everyone, because there is a little something for all tastes and all personalities.

Live Music = The Classiest Choice Ask your grandma. Back in the day, everybody had a band at their weddings. If you really want that vintage feel, get a great room, a great band and a great cocktail and canapé menu. The rest will sort itself out.

This is your wedding: Your chance to throw a party like no other. When it comes to entertainment, you deserve to have the best. The best memories I have from my own wedding are dancing with my husband and watching my daughter sing (and steal the show) with my band mates. With a live band, you get people who love what they do. You get expertise, adaptability and energy that you simply cannot get from a DJ. You get an interactive form of entertainment that everyone can enjoy, from young to old. With a live band you’re getting the party going, before it even starts.

Wives do the laundry, husbands do the yard work – isn’t that how it still works when it comes to household chores in a marriage?

Doing chores is mundane and boring for everyone. Nobody likes cleaning the toilet or taking out the garbage. When both partners in a marriage believe chores are shared equally, everything is peachy keen. The problems arise when one person in a relationship feels overwhelmed because they aren’t getting enough help around the house, leading to feelings of stress and frustration, and ultimately causing increased tension and arguments at home – usually the woman. Most women feel responsible for the chores, even if their partner does help out, she’s usually the one delegating the tasks.

Image Courtesy of Good Enough Mother

Did you know that conflict over domestic duties falls in second place, just after conflict over money in a marriage? When a couple can come up with a plan and divide chores in a way that both feel satisfied with the outcome, they are showing mutual respect for one another, and conflict is averted, yay!

That said, the division of chores has a lot to do with perception.

How do you and your partner divide up the chores and work at home? How much do you think your partner really does?

Try out Emily Post’s Chores IQ Test.

Download and complete the following questionnaire separately and then go over your answers together. Where you agree, celebrate. Where you disagree, it’s time to talk. Find out how much each of you feel like you actually do to help around the house, how much you see the other doing, and what you can improve on.

Today we are excited to share with you a guest post from the uber-talented, Victoria and Vancouver-based wedding photographer Kelsey Goodwin.

Kelsey specialises in photojournalistic, artistic and ethereal wedding photography. She’s giving you a few pointers on what the most important photos of your wedding day are, and the way to find the photographer who will capture the images and create the collection you’re hoping for. Here are her tips on how to find the photographer whom you can trust and communicate with, and share your unique story.

All Images Courtesy of Kelsey Goodwin - KGOODPHOTO

“As women, most of us have an idea of what we want our wedding to look or feel like before we get engaged, sometimes even before we fall in love. It’s fun and exciting. But in the throws of inspiration and pinterest boards, we can sometimes forget that there is no right way or wrong way to do your wedding.

From a photographer’s perspective, brides fall in love with other peoples’ wedding images they see. Or they are supplied with a “shoot list” from another bridal resource. When you hire a professional, we know to focus on the rings and the kiss and the first dance etc. Supplying a shoot list to your photographer is like telling the florist not to forget the bouquet.

Communication and trust are equally important with your photographer. What I am looking and asking for is the real list or conversation. The one that informs me that your fiance’s grandmother is having health problems but is still going to attend – and that it’s her wedding band that will grace your finger that day. If I wasn’t aware of the circumstances, I might not have snapped that shot of her holding and appraising your newly endowed hand, for example, or even the bond expressed between the two of you that might have been missed while we were organising for another formal portrait.

I want to know about the inside joke funny face that you and your lover have together – a face I might not include in the final collection if I didn’t have the story. Your story. Your photographer needs to know the prologue if they hope to pave the epilogue in all its glory.

Just as culturally rich ceremonies have many small nuances that have a deeper importance, every wedding is filled with small moments in between the big ones that will portray the day in a more personal way. Each wedding is so different and this is why it’s difficult to try to emulate another person’s wedding photo – timing, emotion, relationships, location etc. all play a crucial part in the final imagery.

This especially includes the skill of the photographer. Hence it’s often best to hire the author of the photograph that you fell in love with to achieve the same quality and tonality. Tell them what you like about it and they will know the type of wedding images you seek. If that is one of the photos they displayed on their website or advertisement, chances are they are passionate and talented at creating those types of images. You can then be certain they will achieve a similar collection for you.

The most important moments to immortalise are the relationships that are important to you. Even though this is the joining of two families and the formation of a new one, the most important relationship of the day is of course between the bride and groom. This is my favourite relationship to capture, and I approach it in many different ways – photojournalisticly to capture your natural affection, and some guided romantic portraits with a fashion fairytale approach, because I want everyone to look and feel like a rock star.

Above all else, do find a photographer whom you trust and can easily communicate with. Telling them your story will help him or her be hyperaware of the important moments during your special day. It’s good to have a game plan but don’t forget to also relax and enjoy the moments naturally, because the best images are often the spontaneous ones!

If you’re planning a German wedding theme, whether in traditional Bavaria or up in the Alps, or in a bustling city like Berlin or Munich filled with culture, or even traveling down the Rhine River by boat… if you want to have your wedding in a true fairy tale setting, the possibilites are endless in Germany.

It’s the land of fabulous castles high up in the hills, fit for kings and queens, like the beautiful Lichtenstein Castle or at Neuschwanstein Castle, the place which inspired Walt Disney to create the Magic Kingdom. Unfortunately you can’t get married inside Neuschwanstein Castle, but you can set up your ceremony on the grassy area outside, or use the small chapel to say your “I do’s”.

Germany is filled with so much history and tradition, and with that comes amazing antiques! Find intricate wedding rings decorated with symbols of love and quotations from the marriage ceremony to complete your look. Both the bride and groom-to-be wear a ring on their left hand and after the wedding, they move the wedding ring to their right hand, like in many European countries. We absolutely love this! Why shouldn’t the groom-to-be get to wear an engagement ring too?

The first thing on your to-do list for a German wedding theme is to stock up on cheap china. At your rehearsal dinner, the night before your wedding, liven up the evening by throwing the dishes on the ground! This traditional party is called Polterabend, and it is meant to bring the bride more good luck with each piece of china she shatters. Afterwards, the bride and groom together sweep up all the bits and pieces to make sure nothing ever gets broken in their house again! This comes from a German proverb, “scherben bringen glück”, meaning “shards bring luck”.

Don’t forget to also get a German wedding cup, a special vessel that a couple drinks out of for their wedding toast. The old story behind the cup dates back to the 15th century and goes liks this according to Zank You:

Centuries ago, in a small, southern German town called Nuermberg, there lived a wealthy nobleman. His daughter fell in love with a lowly goldsmith and the couple wanted to marry. Her father did not approve, so he threw the goldsmith into a dark dungeon and continued to offer his daughter wealthier, more “appropriate” suiters. The girl grew pale and weak as she longed for her beloved. Her father, concerned for her health, reluctantly offered a proposal:“If your goldsmith can make a chalice from which two people can drink at the same time without spilling a single drop, I will free him and you shall become his bride.”

The nobleman thought he’d proposed the impossible. However, the goldsmith was determined and inspired by love, and he skillfully created a masterpiece. The cup he created is a sculpted girl with a hollow skirt to serve as one cup. The girl’s arms hold a smaller cup that swivels in the direction of the second drinker. The nobleman’s daughter and the goldsmith could each drink from one end, without a drop spilled. The nobleman was left with no choice but to allow the couple to wed, and to this day, the chalice remains a symbol of love, faithfulness and good luck to the couples who drink from it.
