The epitome of vintage is a gorgeous, antique style, lace wedding dress and until you get married (or unless you’re a fashion designer) you don’t realize just how many kinds of lace are out there. The most popular wedding lace is, of course, French lace, and there are hundreds of varieties of this. Each little town has it’s own variation and own name like delicate floral Chantilly lace or gorgeous corded Alencon lace. Then there are the Italian laces, like geometric Venetian or Guipure lace.

If you don’t want to have lace in your dress, but still want to have it in your wedding, a delicate touch of lace can make just about anything feminine and beautiful. Lace works on every level, from wedding dresses, to stationery, decorations and wedding bouquets.

It all starts with the invitations, so incorporate it into your theme right away. Even simply tying a bit of lace onto each vintage/handmade invite once they are complete, adds a lovely touch.

Lace works well in so many combinations for weddings like burlap and lace, pearls and lace… so it’s easy to find places to include it! Try adding lace to the edges of your burlap table runners, for a rustic but elegant look. If you want your bridal bouquet to last a lifetime, have a lace bouquet created just for you, with pearl accents. You could even include a tiny bit of your favourite lace in your groom’s boutonnière. Lace mixes well with most fabrics! Tie some lace around little jars to create super sweet candle holders, or sew some lace doilies together to create your own truly vintage table runners.

How will you be incorporating lace into your wedding day?

So, you’re ready to pop the question. How are you going to do it?

One of the most nerve wrecking moments of a man’s life is proposing to his girlfriend, and usually a lot of thought goes into it. Without fail, the best way is to come up with something that is unique to you as a couple. Ask her while doing something both of you love doing together, on a day that that is special for both of you, in a way that will show her how much she means to you…

Image Courtesy of The Heart Bandits

Here are our 30-ish favourite and most romantic and memorable ways to propose:

1. Take out a full-page ad in a newspaper you know your girlfriend reads daily, so she will find your proposal over her morning coffee.

2. Flying anytime soon? Ask the flight attendants if you can use the plane’s loudspeaker system and propose at 35,000 feet.

3. Go on a romantic boat ride. In the middle of the lake/pond/river, tell her how much you love her and ask her to marry you.

4. Wake her up in the middle of the night, tell her that you love her and couldn’t wait another second, and give her the ring.

5. Spell it out while you are playing scrabble and she’s not looking.

6. Ask her to marry you at the top of a ferris wheel.

7. Hire a skywriter to spell out your proposal for everyone around to see.

8. Book private skate time to your favourite song at Rockafeller Skating Rink and get down on one knee there. You could also use London’s Somerset House, Vienna’s Wiener Eistraum or even Vancouver’s Robson Square.

9. Sneak into her office or classroom before she gets there and write your proposal on her desk or on the blackboard. Stay hidden under the desk, in the closet or right outside the room until she arrives.

10. After she goes to bed, go to her jewellery box and replace her everyday ring with the engagement ring. She’ll be completely shocked in the morning when she goes to put on her regular ring. Capitalise on the element of surprise and ask her then.

11. Love going to the movies? Ask your local theatre to run an ad featuring your proposal and make sure you get there in time for the previews.

12. Spell your proposal out in glow-in-the-dark star stickers on your ceiling. Get into bed, turn the lights off, and look up!

13. Put the ring inside a Kinder Surprise with a customised note.

14. Recreate your first date, whether it was at a coffee shop or dinner, do something silly that you had done that day and which your girlfriend still remembers, and at the right moment, ask her!

15. Make her breakfast in bed and deliver the breakfast tray with the ring placed in the centre.

16. Spell out your proposal with refrigerator magnets.

17. Fill a bath for her and place a floating candle or rubber ducky with a ring tied around it. Go the extra mile and leave a trail of rose petals leading to the bath.

18. Meet for a drink at a fancy hotel bar. When it’s time to go, casually mention that you’ve already reserved a room for the night. When you open the hotel room door, have roses, candles and champagne all set up…

19. Cook and set an lovely candlelight table for a quiet romantic dinner for two at home. Serve her a glass of champagne with the diamond ring in the bottom or ribboned to the stem.

20. Have a friend or family member set up a picnic, complete with wine and cheese, for you in a park. Take your girlfriend for a hike on a route where you’ll stumble upon this surprise proposal picnic.

21. Write her a love note with the proposal at the end of it. Tuck it into her favorite book or the one she happens to be reading at the moment, and when she finds the note, surprise her with the ring.

22. Phone your local radio station, one you know she will be tuning into and have them play your song, and give a short and sweet proposal. Then have her phone in after the song to give her answer on air.

23. Rent a horse and carriage and take a ride through the park or around your most memorable spots. Stop somewhere special or with a nice view and pop the question. Have the driver take pictures or video of the magical moment.

24. Create a personalised fortune cookie with your own proposal message.

25. Don’t let the cold snowy weather stop you from having an amazing proposal! Scratch your proposal into the frost on her car’s windshield, write it in the snow or create a path of white christmas lights leading to you down on one knee with on a cozy blanket with champagne.

26. Ask the pastry chef to write, “Will you marry me?” in chocolate sauce around the rim of her dessert plate.

27. Book a private hot air balloon and ask her at sunset with a bottle of champagne.

28. Arrange to go to a jewellery store after hours, so it’s just the two of you. Go down on one knee and open a ring box- it’s empty! Tell her she can pick out any ring she wants in the store.

29. Create your own crossword puzzle that has the message “Will you marry me” in it, and be prepared to help her work it out over breakfast.

30. Invite your girlfriend over for dinner. Spell out “Will You Be My Wife?” with A-Z Spaghettios.

31. Bring out the kid in you! Use your artistic abilities and draw your proposal with chalk on a walkway.

32. Use signs and banners in your proposal! It’s a great way to create a surprise. She will never expect it. You can propose without even speaking a word. Stencil it onto a wooden sign and place it next to a picnic.

33. Simply pick a place you both love and means something special, like where you first met. Get down on one knee and simply, ask the girl you love to spend the rest of her life with you.

On this chilly April morning we have a collection of our favourite quotes about marriage and love, for inspiration and to remind you why you fell in love in the first place. Sure, marriage isn’t always easy, but to have someone standing by your side through all the ups and downs of life, is so wonderful…

“It is such a happiness when good people get together – and they always do. -Jane Austen

“What counts in making a happy marriage is not so much how compatible you are, but how you deal with incompatibility.” - Leo Tolstoy

“One advantage of marriage is that, when you fall out of love with him or he falls out of love with you, it keeps you together until you fall in again.” -Judith Viorst

“To be fully seen by somebody, then, and be loved anyhow – this is a human offering that can border on miraculous.” -Elizabeth Gilbert

“By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you’ll become happy; if you get a bad one, you’ll become a philosopher.” -Socrates

“We have the greatest pre-nuptial agreement in the world. It’s called love.” – Gene Perret

“I’m selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best.” - Marilyn Monroe

“Never love anyone who treats you like you’re ordinary.” – Oscar Wilde

There’s no doubt that hiring a professional wedding videographer will take up large chunk of your wedding budget, but from personal experience, it is truly worth every penny. Most couples who don’t hire a videographer say they wish they had, and so far we’ve never come across a couple who said they wish they hadn’t.

After months, sometimes even years of planning, your wedding day is over in a matter of hours. The curls will fall out of your hair, your dress will go to the cleaners and then be put away in your closet, maybe to be worn again someday by some lucky lady. All your precious, time-consuming DIY projects will be thrown out or stashed away in boxes. Your flowers will wilt and die, your cake will be eaten, and what you are left with at the end of the day is simply a memory, and well, of course, a new husband or wife to share the rest of your life with.

You’ll have bits and pieces of memories of that day that stand out in your mind, and you’ll have photographs of still images that will bring those memories to life. But there truly is no substitute to sitting back and watching how that incredible day unfold.

Last night our full length wedding video arrived. As we watched it, we sat there in awe of how amazing it was to have so many incredible moments captured on film. It was a tear-filled few hours, to say the least, and left us so grateful to have so many wonderful people in our lives. It is such a surreal experience to see your wedding day as a guest. On the day, you’re so in the moment that you are unable to take in all the details and sensations but they come back so quickly when you see it on film. For us, seeing our wedding video made all the stress of planning our wedding, every tear, every hour of searching for lace, every argument, every coat of paint, every squirt of glue, and every last penny completely worth it.

We had family and friends from Iceland, groomsmen from England and Australia, guests from Germany, Mexico and across Canada all there to celebrate with us, and we realised that our wedding day would be the only time in our lives that we will have all those people together in the same place at the same time. For us, wedding videography was the very first item on our to-do list.

To see how you looked at each other for the first time, to watch how great your wedding kiss really was, to see your beautiful bridal party walk down the aisle with such grace before you and to watch your little ring bearer run into the crowd. To see how not-so-professional your choreographed dance actually was, but still loving seeing how much fun the two of you were having, to hear the laughter and heartfelt words spoken by you and your family and friends, to see the tears and hear the pauses – that is what makes having a professional wedding videographer so incredible.

Your dad wrote countless drafts of his speech, perfecting every little detail after years of thinking about what he would say on the day he would give his little girl away. Your maid of honour googled every bridesmaid speech ever written before finishing her final draft, and your best man wrote down every memory he could use to embarrass you a little while still keeping it heartfelt. And you, well you stayed up till the wee hours of the morning the night before your big day to perfect those wedding vows that deserve to be preserved – all these moments are so special and cannot be relived without being captured on film.

Your wedding just might be the last time you dance with your grandfather. That little nephew of yours is going to grow up extremely fast, and you just might need to hear those wedding vows every once in a while to remind you why you fell in love with each other and maybe to show your own children and grandchildren one day before their wedding.

So think twice before you say you can’t afford a videographer, or you just don’t think it’s worth it. Because you can always cut back on other parts of your day that will later seem trivial. Your wedding is your own personal piece of artwork – designed and created by you, to celebrate your love for each other, with the people you love.

Here are two perfect examples of how incredible a wedding video can be… Courtesy of Hello Tomorrow Wedding Films:

Is professional wedding videography going to be a priority for you? Is it an added extra? Or is it simply not part of your wedding plans and budget? We’d love to hear what you think.

On Saturday March 2nd, brides-to-be and Vancouver wedding industry pros alike gathered at one of Vancouver’s most sought after wedding venues for what promised to be a new and exciting addition to the Vancouver wedding show scene. The Terminal City Club’s Hush Wedding Show was a beautiful and intimate cocktail evening. Everyone was buzzing with excitement for an exclusive meet and greet with some of Vancouver’s most reputable wedding vendors.

Upon arrival, guests were eagerly greeted at the door by two of the Terminal City Club’s doormen. In the main lobby was a white vintage car courtesy of Ultimate Limo, foreshadowing the excitement ahead. Upon registration or ticket purchase, each bride-to-be was given a gift bag and welcomed into the main ballroom. As always, Evan Orion and the team at Flowerz outdid themselves, providing visually stunning, unique and outside-the-box décor throughout the club. From the Chanel inspired curtain of white paper floral, making for a gorgeous dramatic entrance, to various tablescapes in the ballroom, there was more than enough inspiration and eye candy to go around.

Tunes could be heard in the Metropolitan Ballroom from Audio Edge Entertainment, giving the room an alluring and inviting vibe. Blink Acro had a contortionist on hand to give a wild performance that had everyone entranced, and Photobooth Vancouver provided fun snapshots for everyone throughout the night. Guests could be seen eagerly sampling treats from the exquisite dessert buffet or sipping cocktails from the bar whilst chatting with friends and vendors.

On the main floor, another popular feature was the Men’s Whiskey Lounge. Donnelly Group was in attendance mixing custom cocktails and providing hot shaves for the grooms-to-be, a must for any groom looking to relax with a luxurious treatment on the days leading up to his wedding.

A personal favourite of the night was on the second floor in the president’s ballroom – a stunning ceremony set up with dramatic white draping and refreshing outdoor inspired greenery. Alongside delightful passed canapés and gorgeous couture gowns on mingling models, courtesy of Blush Bridal, left all guests feeling content that they chose Hush Wedding Show at the Terminal City Club as the place to spend their Saturday evening.

Although there may not have been as many vendors as there could have been and some of the rooms fell a little flat, such as the tea ceremony room, the team at the Club did a magnificent job of putting together a classy, relaxed and inviting cocktail wedding show in just under three months. If the goal was to show off the venue in a gorgeous way by giving brides many different ideas and inspiration, it was hands down a tremendous success.

Can’t wait to see what they dream up next year!

What a year 2012 was for Heirloom Magazine! This past year saw our dream evolve and grow into something better than we ever could have hoped for, thanks to every single one of you who supported us!

Back in September 2011, it started with a photo shoot and an idea. We had a dream - to bring vintage-focused local inspiration to the Vancouver Wedding Market in an interactive and educational format.

In 2012, the result was Heirloom, a vintage wedding magazine filled with DIY tutorials, expert tips from real married couples, interviews with local vendors, inspirational editorial spreads featuring local and international real weddings… all showcasing the very best of Vancouver’s vintage wedding industry.

In the words of Chief Dreamer, Jeanie Ow, this is how the magazine was born -

“I met Kailey-Michelle in 2011 whilst photographing a wedding she was coordinating. At around the same time, I had been thinking more and more about doing a photo shoot focused on vintage brides and decor, and her style seemed to fit what I was hoping to shoot. We met in late October for lunch, and started planning the details for the shoot. As we chatted, Kailey asked me how I wanted to present the shoot, and I discovered that I really wanted to put it out there to the brides who are planning their own nuptials that putting together a wedding that is vintage-focused is really quite easy.

The first idea was an educational PDF that I wanted to distribute free of charge to anybody who wanted to read about planning a vintage-focused wedding. We brought Tammy in for the invitations, and she was the natural choice for laying out the design of the PDF. It was in February when, after we had looked at the resulting images from Farm Love, that we thought the results of the shoot could be more than just one PDF. Hence, the magazine was born! The original name of the magazine was Darling, but since that was taken, we decided on Heirloom.”

Here are some of our year’s biggest highlights:

We ran our front cover contest on April 5th, 2012

We attended the Vancouver Wedding Industry Meet-up on April 30th, 2012 where we received a very warm welcome and much anticipation from the local community.

We launched Heirloom Magazine’s inaugural issue on May 1st, 2012

Heirloom Magazine started blogging daily on May 22nd, 2012

At the end of May, we also became an editorial partner with Two Bright Lights.

Our first official business cards on July 4th, 2012! Thanks to the vision of our very own Tammy Lyon of Uniquity Designs.

Our featured vendors received Heirloom Badges to put onto their own sites on July 17th, 2012. Yay!

On July 24th, 2012, we announced our first Styled Engagement Session Contest.

And on September 14th, 2012 we announced the release of our second issue … sneak peak here in case you missed it!

Work commenced on our next issue with loads of new and creative inspirations, like this 50′s housewife inspired shoot, featuring Alicia-Rae making homemade lemon curd on September 30th, 2012.

On October 1st, 2012 we switched from Skype to Google Hangout for our meetings.

Pantone has announced the official color of 2013: Emerald!

Many believe the vibrant colour makes you lucky in love, so how fitting to have an emerald themed wedding? It’s also the traditional birthstone for May making it perfect for upcoming spring weddings. According to Greek mythology, emerald is sacred stone of the goddess venus, and is thought to perserve love.

If you want to make a bold statement on your big day, this is your colour.

According to Pantone, Emerald conveys: “Lively, radiant and lush. A color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony.”

It’s part of the perfect palette for a natural, eco-friendly garden wedding, with tables full of succulents and galvanized pails filled with lush greenery. It’s also a staple in any roaring 1920′s theme Great Gatsby wedding with bridesmaids wearing emerald peacock feather hairpieces.

Being such a royal colour, emerald conveys strong heritage – the key to an elegant evening affair. Just picture the sophisticated luxury of a gorgeous ballroom filled with emerald gems, gold details and a gorgeous gown.

You could use it as an accent color too, by mixing it up a bit and including a few shades and textures of green to break up the strong emerald features of your day. It will always look great paired with ivorys and whites, and even other jewel tones like ruby, amethyst and sapphire and so regal with gold.

It can be incorporated with bold elements such as an emerald engagement ring, finger nails, bridesmaids dresses and ceremony decor – or with subtle details like little gems or touches on your wedding stationary, flowers with lots of greenery, green candles or napkins.

How about a fabulous pair of emerald shoes? Maybe a splash of it in your bridal jewellery? Or featured in a vintage brooch on your bridal sash?

The colour of the year is popping up on inspiration boards everywhere, check Pinterest for boards like this to get some more inspiration.

We’re excited to see how you’ll incorporate emerald into your 2013 wedding!

Winter weddings are so enchanting. What would be more lovely than featuring the glittery natural wonders of the world we all love, and having a snowflake theme wedding? Think anything that sparkles… 1920′s fringe and hand beading, twinkling fairy lights, vintage brooches, mulled wine and festive drinks… the possibilites are endless!

The fabulous crystal snowflake bouquet found on Etsy, is made up of three layered frosted acrylic snowflakes surrounded by crystal acrylic beads of “ice”, and a petite handle tied with white satin ribbon. This is a truly special bouquet. If you order the bouquet, it comes with a matching snowflake or icicle boutonniere for your groom, and there is a matching corsage to order as well.

Like the wedding featured on Love My Dress above, winter weddings give the bride the opportunity to accessorise with shrugs, leggings, and an extra bit of glitz and glamour to stand out against the white of snow. Check out our post on BLHDN’s perfect winter vintage bridal accessories for more inspiration. They also have a beautiful line of cover ups, like this stunning Trickling Caplets piece that resembles an icicle with 1920′s inspiration.

If there isn’t any snow on your big day, and you were hoping for some, head on over to Save On Crafts, and pick up some snow confetti to have your guest sprinkle on you as you and your groom walk back down the aisle as an officially married couple!

Another super cute idea – keep your guests toasty and have a hot cocoa bar, (or check out this DIY with free printables) and create some of these heart or snowflake shaped “marshmellows” which are actually Cool Whip frozen on a pan and simply cut out with cookie cutters. Have Pirouette, candy canes, peppermint sprinkles and cinnamon sticks as well. Or, use the “marshmallows” in take home kits as your favours!

Use Martha Stewart’s crafty screw-punched candle holders to add some winter glamour to your table settings as well. Also, it’s simple to create an ethereal snowflake banner as a substitute for traditional wedding bunting to place over your dessert or guestbook table.

Do taco food trucks and wedding bells go together? Of course they do! We’re the biggest advocates for weddings that shout out the couple’s individual personalities, and this one epitomised that through and true! Fantastically coordinated by Vancouver’s very own Lotusevents, and wonderfully photographed by Jean Cueta Photography … Rachel and Paul, your combination of food trucks and DIY vintage wedding details made all of us at Heirloom swoon; you’re totally inspiring!

In the bride’s words…

“We were very lucky with our wedding planning in the fact that so many people from our community have talents and skills that naturally lend to putting on a beautiful event. So many individuals helped to make our day special that it truly turned out to be the best day of our lives…we know that sounds cliche but for us it could not be closer to the truth!.

Most of the inspiration for the wedding came from various wedding blogs (East Side Bride, 100 Layer Cake) and Pinterest. I gathered supplies from thrift stores, borrowed bird cages, vintage cameras and old suitcases from friends and collected white sheets for table cloths.

I can’t say that we ever had a clear vision of what we wanted for the wedding, we just knew we wanted it to feel like us and have a vintage flair. Everything clicked so easily. DEFINITELY hiring wedding planners to help with partial coordination made everything smooth. Paul and I are nurses with no experience in event planning so having some professional support made a world of difference.

The final result felt like a romantic and grassroots carnival, complete with huge red balloons and our friend’s taco truck, which they served tacos out front of the hall. They were a big hit!

My dad is a lighting technician and worked to make the lighting warm and romantic. My favourite touch were the stars of light he cast across the dance floor. One of my other favourite elements were the beautiful flowers my friend Chandi put together. She put tiny succulents into tea light holders and make huge arrangements with deep red flowers, succulents and blackberry brambles.

The whole evening was pure magic. Dancing with my community, seeing my father get choked up for the first time as he delivered his speech and feeling bowled over with the amount of love and support from our families were some of the best experiences of our lives.”

Today’s southern style Swaneset wedding is the perfect marriage of the classicly elegant and the rusticly vintage! Pink roses and bridesmaids dresses spell romantic! Brought to you by Luxe Photography.

In the bride’s words :

“I’ve always wanted a southern-style wedding, classy, vintage and romantic. Some of my inspirations came from the movie ‘The Notebook’ as well as perusing Pinterest and blogs such as Green Wedding Shoes. I wanted to feel as though we were getting married back in the 50′s down in the south on a plantation farm where women all wore hats and feminine dresses. That’s what inspired my lace dress, rose bouquet and hair style. A lot of the elements, such as the burlap and the little jam jars, came from my love to bake, cook and live as organicly as we can.”

Like most of you, I’m simply obsessed with gorgeous heels. Be it red soles, luscious fabric roses or bejewelled heels, I swoon for knock out wedding shoes. Truth be told, they can make or break your outfit … even your wedding day apparel!

So today, I’m going to show you how to have the perfect toe candy, without robbing Peter to pay Paul. (Your fiance will thank me). But how, you ask? Why…by doing it yourself, of course. Pretty fabulous “compromise”, if I do say so myself.

Tutorial via honestlywtf.com

Here’s what you’ll need:

a pair of heels

40-50 large and medium (10-15 mm) multi-shaped rhinestones

30-40 small (3-6 mm) round rhinestones

E-6000 glue

tweezers

small container

toothpick

flat nose pliers (optional)

photo via honestlywtf.com

It’s truly easy. Ready?!

Squeeze glue into small container.

Dip the backside of a large rhinestone into the glue with tweezers.

Press stone firmly, holding in place momentarily, before releasing in desired spot.

Repeat as desired.

Tip: Add large stones around the top, gradually working your way down with smaller ones. This best mimics the original design.

Once all large and medium stones have been applied, go back and add small round stones in the bare spots.

Repeat to second heel.

Remember, there’s absolutely no “right way” to do this. So have fun with it and let your personality shine through! And don’t forget to send me a picture of your DIY Miu Miu’s, or post it on our Facebook Wall. We most certainly want to see!

Happy Crafting, Friends!
