This whimsical DIY winery wedding had an abundance of yellow highlights, both from the creative hands of the bride and groom as well as from Mother Nature herself. A glorious celebration of love and sunshine filled with details captured The Nickersons, we think that it’s the epitome of what we love about British Columbia and summers!

Grace & Joel’s wedding day took place at the beautiful Starling Lane Winery in Victoria, BC. Grace has the prairies in her heart & the winery was the country vibe she was going for with the orchards, fields, & chickens. Guests sat on bales of straw and quilts (loaned from family & friends) during their outdoor ceremony. Grace had a flower girl army – she’s a troop leader for a group of Brownies & most of the troop came out to march down the aisle before her and scatter flowers on the grass. Very sweet.

Grace & Joel’s wedding was a labour of love. There were an incredible amount of DIY touches. Grace loves quirky, vintage & whimsical things and many of the details reflected that. She read her personal vows to Joel off of a long, thin rolled up strip of paper. Her wedding dress was re-made from a vintage dress with polka dotted fabric. The entire wedding party sported yellow, grey, & navy & gingham and wore TOMS; Grace hand-stitched HIS and HERS into her’s and Joel’s shoes. Their unity sand at the ceremony was from Alberta (for Grace) and BC (for Joel).

Friends & family contributed to most of the wedding. Decor & setup was all DIY, the cake was made by a family friend, hair and makeup was done by Grace’s friends, the dress was handmade by her aunt, music was done through and iPod, and a friend of the family played the bagpipes for the groom & groomsmen’s entrance. Grace designed & hand-drew all of the ceremony programs. They are incredibly unique.”

In the bride’s words:

“We knew we wanted to capture the romance and whimsical feeling of our setting. The Lily Barn was perfect and is actually a lily farm with a 120 year old cantilever barn, a pavilion and a gazebo. Jordon and I went for a vintage shabby chic look with cameos and nature-inspired elements. I wanted the colours to be muted and subtle for the flowers, but my favourite colour is peacock blue, so that was in too for bridesmaids and other elements.

Jordon and I were hands-on for the whole event. I never realised what a task it was to plan everything ourselves. We’re both creative engineers, so we made our own invitations, programs and I Spy game cards. Other resources included Etsy for ideas and vintage table numbers (to name just a few), and Pinterest for pulling all the ideas together. My mom came up the week before and was really helpful with putting together elements like the program fans and some last minute sewing; it was really nice that we had that time together before the wedding. On the day of, we couldn’t have done it without our coordinator. We just hired her for the day but without her, we would have been doing all of the setup ourselves instead of enjoying the time getting ready for our special day, so that was money well spent!”

Maggie+Haydex met during their undergrad at UBC. They did the same degree, and so shared many same classes. After being good friends for four years, they started dating, and here they are! Haydex had a surprise proposal plan, but Maggie found the ring, so in the end, she said YES in their bedroom. How adorable!

In the bride’s words:

“I knew even before I got engaged that I wanted my wedding to focus on the importance of family. Both sides of my family have made such a profound impact on who I am. Both of my grandmothers kept SO many keepsakes from earlier generations and with their permission, I wanted them to be the main decorations. Each table at the reception had heirlooms going back all the way to great-great-great grandmothers. The gift table had pictures of both sets of grandparents on their wedding day, with my grandmother’s gown placed behind the table. Every decoration on each bench with a quote from 1 Corinthians was an antique. There was much more details about this day that has to do with my family. A LOT of decor and all of my jewelry were heirlooms!”

We started a series on our Facebook page from the lovely Emily Post, expunging on all topics from etiquette to communication.

Communication is an art. A beautiful art that is so essential for successful relationships, and so we thought that we would keep on that topic, and start a conversation about it.

In Emily Post’s Essential Manners for Couples, a whole chapter is devoted to Communication – The Glue that Holds A Relationship Together.

“Without communication, you have no relationship.”

We’ve talked about how 50% of communication is being a good listener. And that means…

1/ Making eye contact
2/ Not interrupting
3/ Avoid fidgeting
4/ Paying attention

In addition to that, we believe that it’s also setting aside time to actually talk. In this world and age, where the media has reached into our lives through the TV, the computer and even our telephones, it’s so easy to have all of that on and even be a replacement of couples talking to each other. How often are we guilty of sitting and watching TV instead of facing our partners and talking about what has happened in the past day, week or even month? I know that I sometimes opt for watching my favourite TV show over just spending good quality time with my husband.

But when you catch yourself doing that more often than face-to-face chats, that’s when it’s so vitally important to set aside a time when you and your partner sit down and actually talk together. That means no TV … no computers … no telephones! Once a week, during our date night dinner out, my husband and I find a good location, be it a restaurant that doesn’t have a TV on their walls, or at home, and we turn our phones off and spend a few hours really connecting with each other.

Another way is to plan a regular activity that gives you talking time together. It could be something like strolling through a park, or making time to have a picnic.
